Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, is asking Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu for an explanation after being denied entry into Tanzania in December.

Owino was stopped by immigration officers at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. He was told he was “persona non grata” and his passport was rejected.

Owino was held for several hours before being sent back. In response, he wrote a letter to President Suluhu seeking clarification. He asked for a written explanation for the refusal of entry. Owino emphasized his role as a representative of the Kenyan people.

In the letter, Owino explained that he had traveled to Tanzania for business. He also mentioned his strong relationship with the people of Tanzania.

Owino raised concerns about the violation of his rights. He asked why he was denied entry for business or as a representative of Kenya.

Owino referred to international laws protecting freedom of movement. He cited the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. He also mentioned the East African Community’s regulations, which allow free movement of citizens within the region.

Owino reminded President Suluhu that Kenya’s passports are recognized worldwide under international law. He emphasized that as a global citizen, his rights should be respected. Owino asked for a response to his request and offered to provide a Kiswahili translation if needed.

This appeal highlights the importance of upholding regional agreements. It stresses the need to protect citizens’ rights to free movement within the East African Community.
