Kenya has sent its first all-female SWAT team to Haiti. This is part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission. The team, consisting of 144 officers, arrived on February 6, 2025. They were welcomed by MSS Commander General Godfrey Otunge.
The team is highly trained and tasked with helping stabilize Haiti. The country is struggling with violence and political instability. Their mission will support efforts to restore peace.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the deployment of 120 male officers and 24 female officers. They will join 600 personnel already stationed in Haiti. He highlighted Kenya’s commitment to supporting peace in the country.
Haitian officials, including President Leslie Voltaire, Prime Minister Didier Fils-Aimé, and National Police Director General Normil Rameau, welcomed the Kenyan team. They expressed gratitude for Kenya’s support.
Although the mission faces challenges, including a reduction in U.S. financial support, President William Ruto reassured that the U.S. would continue backing Kenya. This followed talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Kenya is now part of a group of countries contributing to Haiti’s peacekeeping efforts. Other nations involved include Jamaica, Guatemala, the Bahamas, and Belize. They are working together to address the violent gangs that have destabilized Haiti’s government for years.
