Three Kenyan runners have collectively earned Ksh 11 million following an outstanding performance at the prestigious Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon held on Sunday, February 9.
Bethwell Kipkemboi, Kennedy Kipyeko, and Vincent Kiprono excelled in the race, clinching the top three positions in an invigorating showdown.
Kipkemboi took home the first place, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 13 seconds, even in the chilly weather at Victoria Park. Kipyeko finished in second place with a time of 2:11:36, while last year’s champion, Anderson Seroi, secured third place, clocking in at 2:11:40.
Kipkemboi credited his win to the formidable competition posed by his fellow Kenyans, expressing, “I’m delighted for them; they pushed me hard, and I felt quite nervous.
The supporters were fantastic, and the locals in Hong Kong were very welcoming. It was a challenging race, but the training I underwent back in Kenya really made a difference.”
The runner also pointed out the substantial Ksh 8.3 million (US$65,000) reward for the men’s race victor, which motivated him to endure the fierce rivalry. Kipyeko, who finished second, received Ksh 3.8 million (US$30,000) for his efforts.
He voiced his gratitude for Hong Kong and pledged to return next year with the singular goal of clinching the title. “I enjoy Hong Kong; I’ve never raced in China before,” he remarked. “This was my first experience, and I was thrilled to be here—it was a dream come true.
Next year, I’ll be back to win. I love the cuisine, the climate, and the hospitality of the people—I appreciate everything about this place.”
